LOGAN FAMILY CONNECTIONS
Are All Logans Related?

Sharing the Logan surname does not mean sharing the same Logan ancestor.
​
The Logan name has a long history in both Scotland and Ireland, and the evidence indicates that it may have developed from more than one origin. Some families may eventually prove to share ancestry, while others may have acquired the same or similar surname independently.

A surname is a clue to investigate, not proof of a family connection.​
ONE NAME, MORE THAN ONE STORY
LOWLAND SCOTLAND
The Logan surname appears in surviving Scottish records by the early 13th century. Robert Logan witnessed a charter in 1204, and later medieval records place people bearing forms of the name in Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, Dumfriesshire, Wigtownshire, and elsewhere.

The chiefly family known as the Logans of that Ilk was associated with lands in Ayrshire. Other important Lowland Logan families later included the Logans of Restalrig near Edinburgh.​
IRELAND
The Logan surname also has a long history in Ireland and may have more than one origin.

In the late 12th century, the Anglo-Norman knight John de Courcy led the conquest of much of eastern Ulster. It is thought that de Logan families may have come from England as part of, or in connection with, the Anglo-Norman settlement that followed de Courcy's arrival. If so, some early Irish Logans may have been of Anglo-Norman origin.

Other Irish Logan families may have different origins, however. The presence of the same or a similar surname does not establish that all Irish Logans belonged to one family or that they were related to the Logan families of Scotland.
HIGHLAND & NORTHEAST SCOTLAND
Historical records also contain Logan families well beyond the early Lowland centers. Highland Logan traditions, including those associated with Drumderfit, have long complicated attempts to describe the surname as one continuous family.

The related spellings Loban/Lobban are particularly interesting. Modern one-name and DNA research has identified northeast Scottish Lobban families and at least some lines in which the surname later became Logan. That does not mean every Lobban was originally a Logan or every Logan belongs to that population.​​
AM I RELATED TO THE LOGANS OF THAT ILK OR RESTALRIG?
The short answer: We don't know yet.
Having the Logan surname does not establish descent from either historic family.

At present, Clan Logan Society International does not have a documented genealogical line connecting modern Logan families generally to the Logans of that Ilk or the Logans of Restalrig.
​
That doesn't mean a connection is impossible. It means it has to be proven.
​
To establish one, the same rules apply that we just taught on Research With Confidence:

Start with yourself → work backward one generation at a time → document every parent-child connection → do not skip the difficult generations.
​
DNA may eventually help connect paternal Logan lines, but DNA works alongside documentary evidence. It cannot substitute for the missing generations in a family tree.

A FAMILY TREE IS A CLUE, NOT PROOF

You may find online trees claiming descent from the Logans of that Ilk, Restalrig, or other historic Logan families. Treat those trees as clues unless each generation is supported by reliable evidence. Copying an unproven connection does not make it proven.
