Start With What You Know
Begin with yourself and work backward through your parents, grandparents, and earlier generations.
Don't skip generations. Before connecting one generation to the next, look for records and other reliable evidence that support the relationship. A matching name or someone else's online family tree can be a useful clue, but it isn't proof by itself.
Take your time. One well-documented generation is far more useful than ten generations built on guesses.
